S1E2 / A CONSTANT BATTLE
Nearly a third of the U.S. military identify as Christian Nationalists, and they're not shy about proselytizing, pressuring, and indoctrinating a warrior vision of Jesus within our armed services. Is America leading a holy war?
APRIL 2023 — Last week, a large, ornamental crucifix adorned with emblems of America’s military branches, was removed from a VA clinic in Austin Texas.
A large painting depicting Jesus watching over American seamen which had been prominently displayed in the administrative building of the US Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, New York, is in the process of being moved the academy’s chapel instead.
These are just a few instances of Christian proselyting within our miliary ranks, and the successful litigation by an organization called Military Religious Freedom Foundation, founded and led by Michael “Mikey” Weinstein, on behalf of those military personnel who believe these symbols have no place in a secular space. MRFF has been nominated seven times for a Nobel Peace Prize.
But Mikey’s no anti-military hairshirt. He’s a registered Republican who worked in the White House as legal council to President Ronald Reagan, and whose family has a long and distinguished legacy of military service. In fact, six member of Mikey’s family have attended the US Naval Academy. Mikey himself served for more than 10 years with the Judge Advocate General Corp.
His resume makes for fascinating reading. He even makes an appearance in the upcoming documentary, “Praying for Armageddon.” After checking out the trailer online, I cannot wait to see it.
